New Zealand exporters can use their New Zealand GAP accreditation to provide quality and supply chain assurances and meet market access requirements of overseas customers.
Because of its reputation for producing some of the safest food in the world, New Zealand GAP is increasingly being accepted by international markets.
New Zealand GAP has also been successfully benchmarked to the world retailers association’s Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and GLOBALGAP.

New Zealand GAP is based on:
- Good Agricultural Practice
- the seven principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis at Critical Control Points)
- elements of ISO 9002
It has been approved by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority and can feed into exporters’, retailers’, manufacturers’ and food service providers' food safety assurance programmes.
The integrity of the programme is maintained by keeping records and documentation, including the New Zealand GAP Manual and checklists. New Zealand GAP Approved Suppliers are also regularly audited by an independent body to ensure they meet the criteria.
Independent, random sampling and testing for agrichemical residues is an important part of the programme and ensures produce is within Maximum Residue Levels set by regulatory bodies.
GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative)
New Zealand GAP has been benchmarked against the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Guidance Document, 4th Edition and meets the GFSI requirements for recognition as an equivalent system.
GLOBALGAP
For the markets where retailers accept systems equivalent to GLOBALGAP, additional features are incorporated into New Zealand GAP used domestically. Subsequently, New Zealand GAP has been benchmarked against GLOBALGAP version 3.0-1 (July 2007) and is recognised by GLOBALGAP as equivalent.
