The Steps Involved
There are a few simple steps to becoming a New Zealand GAP Approved Supplier. A diagram of this process (PDF, 31kb) is also available.
- Choose an appropriate level of certification
for your operation (refer to Choosing Appropriate Market Access). - Registration at the appropriate level and receive the manual
Application forms for the New Zealand GAP manual and training are also available from Horticulture NZ. The application form doubles as a GST invoice. - Attend training or self-teach.
Following the receipt of the manual, you may attend the training workshop and/or focus on the requirements and guidance in the manual.
This manual is written with an appropriate level of guidance to inform the supplier why and how they can implement their programme and is designed to allow self-teaching in place of face to face training.
The cost of the training workshop, including this manual, is $225 (incl. GST). You will be shown how to implement the programme as it relates to your property or organisation and how to comply with the checklist requirements.

New Zealand GAP (GLOBALGAP Equivalent) Self Assessment Summary (for recording your self assessment)
New Zealand GAP Assessment Checklist (PDF 312kb) - Apply the programme and register for assessment.
When you are confident your systems meet the required standard, use the application form received at the training workshop or from Horticulture NZ to register for assessment at the appropriate market access level.
The annual fee is payable at this stage. The assessment application form doubles as a GST invoice.
An assessor will contact you to arrange a date and time to complete this assessment. - Successfully complete the assessment and become accredited as an Approved Supplier.
A full assessment will be made of all your operations, using the assessment checklist received at training or downloaded from our web site. Once this is completed and you have demonstrated that your processes meet the required standards, you will be accredited as a New Zealand GAP Approved Supplier and be sent a certificate.
Approved Suppliers and their accreditation status are also listed here. - Complete the Licence Agreement to use the logo.
Having gained accreditation, you will need to complete the licensing agreement, before being able to use the New Zealand GAP brand. There is no fee for using the logo. - Maintain your accreditation.
Accreditation is maintained through payment of an annual fee, annual self assessment and an independent third party assessment. This is done to ensure your processes continue to meet the required standards.
Approved Suppliers are contacted by Horticulture NZ three months prior to their anniversary with information on how to maintain their accreditation, a checklist for completing the self assessment and an invoice for the annual fee. - Maintain your ability to manage your systems.
The programme emphasis is on continuous improvement – even the best practices can be improved.
Information on training courses and best practices are available from Horticulture NZ. - Keep track of your progress and give us feedback and suggestions.
Continuous improvement needs feedback to happen. This is an important part of the programme.
We welcome and encourage your suggestions and comments.
Choosing Appropriate Market Access
Acceptability
New Zealand GAP is set at a high standard which is acceptable to both New Zealand and international markets.
The programme used on the NZ domestic market meets the needs of NZ customers and regulators and many international customers.
The programme used on the NZ domestic market has had some features added to it to gain GLOBALGAP equivalency (www.globalgap.org).
The Access Modules
Primarily for the New Zealand domestic market
New Zealand GAP for the NZ domestic market is audited by independent third party auditors. There is no requirement for these auditors to be accredited to ISO Guide 65 standards. Currently, the independent third party auditor is AsureQuality.
Domestic Market Programme used Globally
New Zealand GAP can be used for access to the NZ domestic market and many international markets.
Additional features which make New Zealand GAP, GLOBALGAP Equivalent
For the markets where retailers accept systems equivalent to GLOBALGAP, additional features are incorporated into New Zealand GAP, used on the domestic market.
The GLOBALGAP equivalent programme is audited by independent third party auditors who are accredited to ISO Guide 65 standards. Currently, the independent third party auditors are AsureQuality and SGS. The audit frequency is annual.
How are the Modules Distinguished?
The New Zealand GAP branding on all three modules is the same.
The modules are distinguished by the certification held. The certification held is described by the Approved Supplier’s certificate and their web site listing.
